M F Husain was born in 1913 in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. The artist started painting from an early age, largely self-taught, he later moved to Mumbai in 1937, determined to establish himself as a painter. In 1948, Francis Newton Souza invited Husain to join the Progressive Artists' Group. This was to be a defining period in the artist's life.
Husain initially began his career by painting billboards for Indian films and designing furniture and toys. The Indian cinema billboards were to profoundly impact M F Husain's art practice and the artist combined themes of: Folk, tribal and mythological art, to create pioneering art forms, rooted deeply in cultural identity. His prominent rise and fame came after the screening of his remarkable, experimental black and white film: 'Through the eyes of a painter' screened in Berlin, for which the artist won the prestigious 'The Golden Bear' at the Berlin Film Festival.
M F Husain depicted major icons of the subcontinent, through the ages, famed for his commercially successful and critically acclaimed series such as: 'Mother Teresa', 'Mahabharata', 'Theorama', 'Gaja Gamini' and more.
